Mary
Mary, or Gogo, is the keeper of history, the quiet force behind the Inkwell Order’s most critical intelligence efforts. A sprightly and sharp-minded septuagenarian, she holds the knowledge of early Order battles—many fought in the shadows of Cold War proxy conflicts across Sub-Saharan Africa.
For decades, Mary operated under the perfect cover: a schoolteacher at one of Cape Town’s most prestigious boys’ schools. Once the heart of global trade (illegal or otherwise) for vessels that chose the longer, more treacherous route around the Cape of Storms required her particular attention. Mary made it her duty to track their movements, decipher their intentions, and ensure that no threat to global stability slipped through unnoticed.
Though officially retired, she remains a formidable presence within the Order, mentoring younger agents and guiding them through the complexities of intelligence work in the Southern Hemisphere. Her home in the Overberg, perched among the rolling hills of the Western Cape, serves as both a sanctuary and an informal field office, where agents come to debrief, regroup, and seek her wisdom.
Tall and well-appointed, Mary carries herself with effortless grace. Her short-cropped silver hair frames keen green eyes that miss nothing, and her warm, twinkling smile masks a mind as sharp as ever. A lifetime spent hiking the rugged terrain of her homeland has kept her frame lean and her spirit untamed.
Mary’s ability to disappear into the fabric of everyday life is her greatest skill. Where others rely on brute force or high-tech surveillance, she uses subtlety, charm, and an uncanny knack for extracting secrets without her targets ever realizing they’ve been compromised. She was the unseen hand connecting the dots of Cold War intelligence as it flowed through Angola, South West Africa, and Mozambique.
Beyond espionage, Mary is a historian at heart, a guardian of the Order’s knowledge. Her memory is an archive of past missions, lost artifacts, and forgotten battles—making her an indispensable key to solving the Order’s most wicked problems. In her downtime, she turns to painting, channeling her creativity into vivid depictions of the landscapes and faces she has encountered in her storied life.
Mary may have stepped out of the field, but her presence is woven into the very fabric of the Inkwell Order. To underestimate her is a mistake few live long enough to repeat.
